White polos are the most common golf shirt on tour. Seven hats in ten are white and nearly every pair of shoes is. Navy is the top single pants color, though players wear gray in all its shades slightly more often. Black and navy polos showed up a little more often on Sunday, but not by enough to rule out chance. The PGA Tour dress code sets no colors, so everything here is the players’ own choice. We counted what players wore in 1,310 rounds to get these numbers, and every player and tournament we cover has its own page. How we counted.

Players wear white polos most often

White makes up 28% of rounds (between 26% and 31%). It is the color 47% of players wore most often. That gap between the share of rounds and the share of players means white is the default color for many players who also mix in others. Pale blue or gray comes next at 20%. Pink or red shirts account for 10% of rounds and navy for 9%. Blue and black each sit at 7%. White is 31% of polos at the majors and 27% elsewhere, a small gap.

At least 15% of polos, about one in seven, have a pattern. The real share is higher, because our check found patterns we missed and never the reverse.

Players wore navy pants in 24% of rounds. Navy is the color 34% of players wear most. If you group gray (18%) and light gray (11%) together, the gray family takes the lead at 29%. Black pants make up 17% of the total. Khaki sits at 14% and white at 11%. Patterned pants are almost unheard of. We logged exactly three pairs. When players wear outerwear, they choose black (25%), navy (22%), or gray (17%), though our sample size for jackets is small.

Hats and shoes are almost always white

White hats cover 70% of rounds. Navy (14%) and black (12%) are the next most frequent colors. White shoes dominate the field at 94% of rounds, with black shoes trailing at 6%. About one in five white shoes has a second color on the sole or trim. For the makers behind them, see our count of the shoes pros wear.

A Japanese test of nine polos left in the sun found that white stays cooler to the touch and black gets the hottest.

Players pair pale blue or gray polos with gray pants 6% of the time. A white polo with black pants makes up 5% of rounds. Black on black is the dark outlier at 4% of rounds. A white polo with khaki pants accounts for 3%.

Scottie Scheffler wore the white and navy pair in the final round of the 2026 Masters. Across 53 of his rounds, though, he wore almost no black in his polos, pants and hats. Matt Fitzpatrick played the final round of the 2026 Players Championship in a white polo and gray pants. Whatever the outfit, the shoes stay white: Adam Scott’s golf shoes and Tom Kim’s golf shoes show each pair round by round.

Sunday polos were not clearly darker

Phil Mickelson said at the 2015 Masters that dark colors help him “get more aggressive”. In the 16 events where we counted all four rounds, black or navy polos made up 14% of shirts in the first three rounds and 20% in round four. That gap is within the noise, so we cannot say the final round runs darker. White polos dropped slightly from 30% to 23% on Sunday. That is also within the noise, so we cannot claim a shift there either. Rickie Fowler has worn orange on Sundays for his college colors.

Tiger Woods has worn red in final rounds since his amateur days. “I’ve worn red ever since my college days basically, or junior golf days, big events on the last day,” he said in 2013. “I just stuck with it out of superstition, and it worked.” “My mom thought that being born a Capricorn, that red was my power color,” he said in a 2024 interview. Many players wore red and black as a tribute to him in the final round of the 2021 WGC-Workday Championship. A 2005 Nature paper found combat-sport athletes assigned red won more often, though a 2013 study of UFC fights found no advantage.

Updated 26 October 2026: on 23 October, with all four Masters rounds counted, this gap moved just past the line we use for statistical noise. One of those Masters first-round shirts turned out to be from a different event, so the Masters no longer has all four rounds in our count. Without it, the gap is within the noise again, and we no longer say the final round ran darker.
